Buongiorno,
here's my Market Watch from the Alemany farmers' market
for June 30th. There are so many excellent choices now that it's summer -- you should have no problem cooking something excellent for our upcoming vegetarian dinner.
Ciao,
Marco Flavio
What I found this week:
Beautiful peppers in all colors (see above). Summer offers the opportunity to garnish dishes with a broad range of colors. Don't miss out: recipes from Allrecipes and Epicurious.
Italian eggplants are finally ready. I'm roasting mine for Baba Ganouj as I write (the key is enough lemon). Here are some recipes from Allrecipes or Epicurious.
Yes, the first tomatoes are here. Some of the cherry ones are sweet and ripe, but most are still tart and bland. If you can find it in you, wait a little more. I know ... it's hard.
If summer means tomatoes for you, try the organic brandywine heirlooms. Right now they're better than the rest. This is the beef steak of the tomato world: Cut a thick slice, match it with the same of milky fresh mozzarella, a few leaves of basil, a few gold droplets of olive oil and coarse salt. That's all you ever needed ... you just didn't know it yet.
Tomatillos are finally here, for those delicious salsas. Get out your mortar and pestle!

Other more aggressive peppers are making the scene, including jalapeños in many colors. Infuse your own vodka with them, or add them to your favorite dish. Me? I love the white ones. Recipes from Allrecipes or Epicurious.
All the berries your pies (or cereal) will ever need. Season's short, so go for it before all that's left are strawberries or sad specimens in the frozen food section at Safeway to satisfy your cravings.
Alongside the peaches, nectarines and apricots, pluots (plum/apricot hybrids) offer a nice flavor variation on the standard plum.
And the colors...
Many varietals of melons have arrived: Santa Claus, Orange Flesh, Honeydew and a few more were available today. Only one way to find out what you've been missing.

What's this? Bosch's depiction of the Apocalypse? Not quite...
Enjoy your sunflowers.
